We’re excited to announce once again a stellar wine tasting event at Workshop Tasting Room. The blossoms are out and the vineyards are in bloom. It’s bud break time in the vineyards.

To celebrate we’ve lined up a very special French Wine Tasting for you at this event: a Cremant de Bourgogne, Bourgogne Blanc, Corsican Rose, Chinon, Lirac Red, and a Gigondas Tradition.

Practically all the most famous grape varieties used in the world’s wines are French varieties, meaning that they either originated in France or became famous through their expression in French wines. These varieties include Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, among many others.

Award winning solo harpist, Susan Haas returns to Workshop to play her lively pop music.

Small bite platters and french culinary dishes are welcome!

Enjoy the calm power of cabernet wine at Workshop Tasting Room – In Praise of Powerful Cabernet Reds – a Workshop Tasting Room Event on January 28, 2017 from 4:00p – 7:00p, 3906 N. 34th St. (on 34th under the tall fir trees just off Proctor Avenue!), Tacoma, WA 98407.

Good deep cabernet wine is filled with the firm grip you seek – full bodied – with big tannins calmed by soft oak exposure.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most widely recognized red wine grape varieties – the crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon blanc – pest resistant thick skins – low yielding and hardy, silky smooth with age.

We will taste cabernet wine from around the world: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, with Tannat thrown in for good measure.

These full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon wines have aging potential with a pronounced bouquet of black current and mint mingled with cedar in cooler climates and notes black olives veering towards the jammy side when grapes are grown in more moderate climate.

Stay the course with us to learn more about the wines we will pour on this evening and the winemakers we will feature on January 28, 2017.

Bodegas Protos is Ribera del Duero’s pioneer winery. ‘Protos’, is from the Greek word for “first”. Protos’ history goes back to 1927, when the area’s growers combined their efforts to establish a winery. The 1960s were a crucial period in the establishment of the Protos wines: the market expanded and the company began work on a new aging cellar in the heart of the hill that supports the castle, with a capacity for 3,500 oak barrels along galleries dug 9/10th of a mile into the earth, in a labyrinth that guards the secret of the wine’s success.

The Tasting:

* 2014 Michael Pozznan Wine – Annabelle Chardonnay

The Annabella 2014 Napa Valley Russian River Reserve Chardonnay is a bright, light straw color in the glass. Youthful but sophisticated, the wine entices with aromas of honeydew melon, juicy tangerine, and a slight hint of butterscotch. In the mouth, the wine strikes an impossible balance between voluptuous and delicate – with a silky, weighty mouth feel playing counterpoint to fine-spun flavors of citrus blossom and a hint of cinnamon. The slight structure provided by oak frames the wine’s delicacy perfectly, providing length and depth to its elegance. Enjoy this wine with butter sautéed sea scallops, served with an arugula salad with goat cheese and mandarin oranges.

* 2010 Domaine Brunely Vacqueyras “Cuvee la Tour Aux Cailles”

Half Grenache, half Syrah. Fermented and aged all in concrete tank. This is BIG. Dark, rich color. Leads with briar-y wild blueberries and dark strawberries then black pepper, violets, crème de cassis and new leather. Very cleanly made (no “French funk” here). Firm tannins and good acidity…this is one to cellar. Decant for at least an hour. Better yet, hold and drink now 2016-2022.

* 2013 Domaines Astruc Reserve Pinot Noir (Vin de Pays d’Oc) Languedoc-Roussillon, France

This lovely wine starts off with sweet strawberry jam and maraschino cherry scents that turn raw and leafy on the palate. Lean and green on the finish. For wine enthusiasts on a budget, Languedoc-Roussillon is becoming known as a great value wine, and Pinot Noir pairs well with a wide range of foods—these fruitier versions make a great match with salmon or other fatty fish, roasted chicken or pasta dishes.

* Echeverria 2013 Gran Reserva, Syrah, Colchagua Valley, Chile

A vibrant and tasty syrah. Notes of deep purple color. Bright, savory, complex aromas of black raspberry custard tart, chocolate, smoked peppercorn, and mixed olives with a supple, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, appealing, medium-length tomato, meat, and nutskin finish with well-integrated tannins and moderate oak. This wine is a vibrant and tasty syrah that will shine at your table.

* 2013 Tres Palacios, Carmena Reserva, Maipo

Tres Palacios produces some of the best Merlot in Chile, but also some soft, elegant Cabernet. The100% Carmena wine was allowed to stand for 10 months in French oak barrels.
Aromas of ripe black and red fruits like blackberry, blueberry, strawberry and cherry, with spicy notes blend with hints of chocolate and snuff, for a rich structure, thick and balanced wine, with soft , velvety tannins that give a large volume and persistence. Ideal for pasta, semi mature cheeses, soft meats.

* 2013 Esser Vineyards – Monterey County Cabernet Sauvignon

Award-winning Esser Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from lots from San Lucas and the most southern location Hames Valley Vineyards. The blend elicits deep aromas of black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and oak spice. Mouth filling flavors of black fruits, cocoa and vanilla are balanced with integrated tannins and a lingering finish of sweet fruit and subtle spices.

We love sparkling bubbles and imagine you’ve always loved champagne. You already associate it with many occasions in your life, right?

But what sort of connoisseur are you? Let’s take time at this event to look at the color of the champagne. To smell the irresistible aroma and distinguish between subtle, delicate and powerful aromas in these wines. Let’s unveil the secrets of what you taste on your palate.

We’re pouring an amazing selection of exquisite bubblies. Prepare to enjoy this selection of delights:

  • Champagne Herriot Brut Souverain NV:  91 points from Wine Spectator. An impeccably balanced champagne from the House of Henriot, family owned and run since 1808.
  • Champagne Moutard Buxeuil Brut Grand Cuvée NV: 91 points from Wine Spectator/90 W.A. A 100% Pinot Noir blend of several vintages matured in the bottle for three years. Impressive notes of brioche, nuts, and red berries permeate a rich and seamless palate. Records of the house date back to 1700’s.
  • Azienda Agricola FRANCO MONDO DOCG 2015: The lengthy fermentation on this Moscato d’Asti wine guarantees finesse and slight sparkle with characteristic scents of the Moscato grapes.
  • De Chanceny Cremant de Loire Rosé NV: The fruit comes from 20- to 30-year-old vines for wine with a delicate, sprightly nose; aromas of fresh red fruit; and incomparably fine bubbles.
  • Laluca Prosecco: A nose of orchard fruits, crisp pears, and lemon curd, all of which come together in a rich, creamy off-dry style. A beautiful aperitif.
  • Marques de Gelida Brut Exclusive Gran Reserva Sparkling Cava 2012: Full of wonderful brioche aromas, apple and pears, with weight on the palate and wonderful texture. 100% Methode Champenoise Reserva Cava.
  • Antica Fratta Brut DOCG: A refined project that brings together bubbles and glamor. An elegantly fresh, vivacious and full Franciacorta, characterized by fruity and floral aromas from Chardonnay grapes.

Welcome to the change of season! At this time we welcome simple, satisfying roasted meats and vegetables highlighting the best of fall farmer’s market produce. We share an undeniable desire to indulge in delicious fall comfort foods when the weather cools down. And, we crave stronger wines that will go with bigger, richer, warming foods of the season.

We’ll open our September 17th afternoon tasting with the following selections.

  • An impressive and pure Beaune 2014 white chardonnay reserve from Burgundy, France,
  • A fresh and powerful 2012 estate white blend wine from the Rhône Valley,
  • A highly seductive Italian 2014 alpine red wine from Alto Adige, Italy,
  • A juicy & full-bodied 2012 red wine vinified from grapes grown in limestone rich soils in San Bonito County, Napa, CA, and;
  • An opulent traditional red wine 2013 from Douro, Portugal touched by Bordeaux’s Bruno Prats, grandson of Fernard Ginestet, owner of Château Margaux.
